What's in Aston Martin Flywheels?

The flywheel is a heavy, precisely balanced disc attached to the engine’s crankshaft, designed to store rotational energy and smooth out power delivery. In a manual transmission vehicle, it provides the friction surface for the clutch disc, enabling smooth gear changes. It also dampens engine vibrations, maintains crankshaft momentum between combustion strokes, and engages with the starter motor during engine start. Flywheels can be made from cast iron, steel, aluminum, or lightweight alloys, with heavier versions favoring smoothness and lighter ones enhancing throttle response and acceleration.

Where it is located in the car? How should it be properly maintained?

The flywheel is located at the rear of the engine, bolted directly to the crankshaft, and housed inside the transmission bell housing. It sits between the engine and clutch assembly in manual transmission systems. Maintenance includes inspection during clutch replacement, as heat spots, scoring, or warping can occur. Symptoms of a failing flywheel include clutch slippage, vibrations, noise during clutch use, or difficulty shifting. Light wear may be corrected by resurfacing, but severe damage requires replacement.
